What it's about

Bats do not have an easy life. Hedges are disappearing and old buildings are being renovated so that they can no longer find shelter. Light pollution and the decline of insects also cause them trouble.

Until now, the Sihl Valley region lacked an emergency care station for bats. On the grounds of the Zurich Zoo, such a station has been operated for some time. Since spring 2022, Wildnispark Zurich has been testing whether an emergency care station can be set up in Langenberg Wildlife Park. This test operation was successful. A total of eight fosterlings were assigned to Wildnispark Zurich, six of which were successfully released again.

Wildnispark Zurich now wants to expand the emergency care station and incorporate it into the permanent operations of the zoo. In order for the exhausted and injured animals to be examined and cared for, in addition to structural measures and further training for the animal keepers, a special aviary is needed in which the bats can practice flying before they are released back into the wild.

Help for bats

Emergency care station for injured and exhausted bats

The majority of native bat species are vulnerable or even endangered. By operating an emergency care station for bats, Wildnispark Zurich aims to protect and strengthen these fascinating native mammals.
