Large ungulates such as European bison, aurochs and red deer once shaped the landscape of Switzerland. Thanks to these herbivores, forest clearings were created and thus important habitats for numerous other animal and plant species. Large herbivores are therefore an important component of an intact nature.
Unfortunately, the European bison is only found in captivity in Switzerland today. The Wildnispark Zurich Foundation participates in the conservation breeding programme of the European bison and supports the "Wisent-Thal" project, which aims to reintroduce the European bison to the canton of Solothurn.
