Generation change at Zurich Langenberg Wilderness Park
The female bear at Zurich Langenberg Wilderness Park gave birth to another three cubs in January 2016. Today, May 4, the four animals moved from the secluded enclosure to the large display section of the bear enclosure. There they can be observed by visitors as they explore their new surroundings. The adult male bear lives temporarily in the separation enclosure. After a certain acclimatization period for the cubs in the bear enclosure, the adult male bear will be slowly and gradually reunited with the female and the cubs.
All three cubs from 2013 successfully placed
The timing for the female bear could not have been better for those responsible at the zoo. The remaining two cubs from 2013 were handed over to Naples Zoo on May 3. The Zurich Wildlife Park has thus managed to successfully place all three cubs born in 2013. This is not a matter of course for brown bears with their long life expectancy, nor is it the rule.
The three-year-old male and the female of the same age will move into a renovated bear enclosure at Naples Zoo. Although the new home is considerably smaller than the outdoor enclosure in Langenberg, it will still allow the animals to retreat away from the eyes of visitors. In addition, those responsible at the Italian zoo are experienced and endeavor to compensate for the lack of space by providing incentives to keep the animals occupied. And very importantly, the social contact between the siblings will continue in the long term.
