Read moreReplacement of the chestnut avenue in Langenberg
The old chestnut trees in the avenue between the western part and the center of the Zurich Langenberg Wilderness Park show severe injuries and damage in the root area. This was the result of investigations carried out by experts on behalf of the park management. On July 10, 2014, a horse chestnut tree in the avenue spontaneously fell over. The root pattern found confirms the results of the investigation. On the one hand, the root damage was caused by decades of trampling and grazing in the former red deer enclosure. On the other hand, they are related to the earlier path expansion that took place in several stages.
In order to continue to ensure the safety of visitors, the Zurich Wilderness Park Foundation has decided with a heavy heart to fell the chestnut trees, which are over 100 years old, and replace them with new trees. When selecting the new trees, care will be taken to ensure that the tree species is not susceptible to disease and that the tree individuals are of local origin. The replacement planting in late fall will be carried out with the utmost care and will be supervised by specialists. In this way, the park management hopes to ensure that the striking avenue of trees between the two parts of the park, which is highly valued by visitors, has a long-term future.
