For Isabelle Roth, Head of Natural Forest and Deputy Managing Director of the Zurich Wilderness Park Foundation, the new markings in Sihlwald are a matter close to her heart: she wants to encourage visitors to treat the protected natural forest with care and respect. "In the nature discovery park, our visitors can experience the development of the primeval forest-like wilderness. Clear rules are needed to protect this sufficiently," says Roth.
New prohibition signs
Visitors to Sihlwald will now see wooden posts with dark green signs along the path. These replace the previous signposts for horse riders and cyclists, which were depicted as mandatory signs. Prohibitions have also been added. The existing signs at the entrances to the Sihlwald will be renewed: visitors will find information, the rules in force since 2008 and a map of the protected area. The official signage of the Swiss hiking trails will remain as before. Nicole Aebli, ranger at the Zurich Wilderness Park, says: "I am very pleased about the new marking system and am sure that it will help our visitors to find their way and respect the rules of conduct."
Protected area of national importance
The Zurich Sihlwald Wilderness Park is a protected area of national importance. In 2016, a nationwide marking system was adopted for this, which had previously been developed in a successful collaboration between the federal government (FOEN), the protected areas, the cantons and Pro Natura. The new Sihlwald protected area marking system developed on this basis is financed by the FOEN and the Canton of Zurich. The signs are currently being installed by the rangers of the Zurich Wilderness Park Foundation. The uniform nationwide system improves the recognition of protected areas and makes it easier to understand the rules.
