Modern animal information

in the oldest zoo

Media release
At 150 years old, Zurich Langenberg Wildlife Park is the oldest zoo in Switzerland. Yet the zoo in Langnau am Albis is extremely modern. The best example is the new information boards for each animal species: colorful, informative and somewhat playful.

Designed to arouse curiosity and answer unanswered questions, the new information boards about the animal species in the Zurich Wilderness Park are eye-catching and stimulating. Designed as a hidden object, they convey the most important facts and figures about the brown bear, wolf, red deer, ibex and all the other native wild animals that live in Langenberg in a fun and playful way. For example, visitors learn that the brown bear, as a predator, actually lives almost as a vegetarian. Or that wolves live to be a maximum of 15 years old. And that the red deer has been at home in Langenberg since the zoo was founded in 1869.

Not stealing the show from the animals

The panels developed by the Vollkorn design studio in Baden contain all the basic zoological information in text and graphics. The texts are printed in German and English, and the graphics can be understood by children worldwide. The main attraction on each panel is the scientific drawing of the respective animal species. Vollkorn not only shows the physical characteristics of the animal species, but also includes peculiarities from the social coexistence or behavior of wild animals in the scenes depicted. For all their beauty and wealth of information, the modern and simple panels never steal the show from the main characters in the animal enclosures. The most important thing is and remains the personal observation of the living wild animals in their habitats. The playful observation tip on each panel also fits in with this. It is intended to encourage readers to focus their attention on the animals in the enclosures.

Gift from the Friends

The development and production of the new information boards was only possible thanks to the financial support of the Förderverein Wildnispark Zürich - formerly the Society for the Promotion of the Langenberg. The association is donating the new boards to the Langenberg to mark its 150th anniversary.
