At times, there were twice as many visitors to Sihlwald as in normal years. Langenberg Zoo also achieved pleasingly high visitor numbers, despite having to remain closed for three months.
The past year has shown more than ever how important the Zurich Wilderness Park is for the population in the region. Whether family day-trippers, cyclists or hikers: people find impressive nature experiences, distraction and relaxation here.
The pandemic year has attracted an above-average number of visitors to Zurich Wilderness Park. The total number of visitors to Sihlwald increased by more than 70 percent. At times, there were even twice as many people on the trails as in normal years. Langenberg Zoo was also a popular excursion destination: although it had to close its gates for three months, visitor numbers were almost as high as in previous years. The zoo recorded a total of 357,000 visits.
An intense year with numerous highlights
"Of course, the COVID-19 pandemic has also had a huge impact on our day-to-day work," says Karin Hindenlang Clerc, Managing Director of Wildnispark Zürich, taking stock. "The ranger team and animal keepers were on special duty for months. The education specialists were also very busy due to the short-term planning horizons."
Fortunately, there were also numerous highlights throughout the year: The opening of a special exhibition at the Nature Museum, the discovery of rare animal species in the Sihlwald forest, the arrival of a new lynx pair and much more. The pictures and texts in the recently published 2020 annual report provide a recap of the events and the pleasant atmosphere in Zurich Wilderness Park.
Outlook: The pressure on nature is increasing
The trend for people to spend their leisure time in nature is continuing. This increases the pressure on plants and animals. "The challenge of striking a good balance between the protection of nature and the needs of people seeking recreation will keep us very busy in the coming years," says Karin Hindenlang Clerc. "Our commitment to raising people's awareness of the need to treat nature with care is needed more than ever."
