Pro Sihltal Yearbook 69/2019
Animal-friendly, close to nature, direct, continuous, free of charge. This is how District President Thomas Heiniger describes the Zurich Langenberg Wilderness Park from his own personal experience in the editorial of the recently published Pro Sihltal Jahrheft.
It all began in 1869 with a long-cherished favorite idea of city forester Carl Anton Ludwig von Orelli. In view of the over-hunted forests of the 19th century, he wanted to create a wildlife garden with a "beautiful and lively forest" on the Langenberg in Langnau am Albis. In doing so, he created a "permanent place of enjoyment" for the city population of Zurich at the time and a "place of pilgrimage for those in need of recreation and those eager to learn from near and far".
Over the past 150 years, the Langenberg has evolved from the favorite idea of the city forester von Orelli into a modern, scientifically managed zoo. Modern animal husbandry at Langenberg is based on the latest scientific findings. The focus is no longer on exhibits and the exotic, but on the welfare of the animals and the personal visitor experience.
In addition to the development of the zoo, the current annual brochure describes the educational offers for school classes, little-known places such as the spring water castle or reintroduction projects for species conservation. The booklet also offers a glimpse into the future with the planned adventure worlds.
The Pro Sihltal annual booklet is available from the Zurich Wilderness Park Visitor Center in Sihlwald, the Wilderness Park Shop in Langenberg and from Pro Sihltal.
