Christmas trees – a feast for moose and red deer

Invitation to the press event in the Wildnispark Zürich

Moose feed almost exclusively on conifers for months in winter. Red and silver fir trees are also an important source of food for red deer and roe deer during the cold season. Fortunately, Wildnispark Zurich is receiving numerous unsold Christmas trees from Coop and Grün Stadt Zürich again this year.

Wilderness day in the Sihlwald

An exciting event for the whole family: a wildlife day will be held in Sihlwald on September 29. The focus is on the magnificent sand lizard, hedgehogs, wild bees and other small animals.

Lynx from the Zurich Wilderness Park released into the wild in Germany

The wild lynx in Western and Central Europe are threatened by inbreeding. The existing populations need to be better connected to ensure regular genetic exchange between them. For this reason, a female lynx that was born in 2023 at Langenberg Zoo in Langnau am Albis was released into the wild yesterday evening in the Thuringian Forest.

Young otters in the Zurich Wilderness Park

The otter enclosure at Langenberg Zoo in Sihlwald has been enriched by another attraction: two young otters(Lutra lutra) have been on display here for a few days now. The otter is an endangered species in Europe; the Zurich Wilderness Park Foundation participates in the international conservation breeding program of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums (EAZA).

Rare beetle discovered in Zurich Wilderness Park

Bolitophagus reticulatus, the notch-necked tinder fungus beetle, is a very rare, demanding beetle species and only lives in areas where nature is allowed to be pristine. Where dead and weakened trees are not removed from the forest and tinder fungi thrive as a result. At the end of June 2024, the beetle was detected in Sihlwald by a researcher from Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH. This is the first record in the canton of Zurich, and it has also rarely been sighted in the rest of Switzerland. The species had presumably been almost extinct in Switzerland for decades.

Excursion tip:

"Lynx and dragonfly" wildlife day at Langenberg Zoo

On Sunday, June 16, it's all about "Lynx and Dragonfly" at Langenberg Zoo. The event, known as Wildlife Day, offers a varied program for the whole family with short guided tours, a lecture and various stands.

Annual report 2023

The Zurich Wilderness Park Foundation's review of 2023 is encouraging: thanks to targeted enhancement measures along the Sihl, significantly more sand lizards have been observed. The operation of the new emergency care station for bats at Langenberg Zoo also got off to a successful start. And according to a representative survey, the Sihlwald Nature Discovery Park has become better known to the public.

The return of the large herbivores

A new exhibition will open at Langenberg Zoo on May 1st. "Wisent & Co. - the landscape gardeners" impressively shows how the large herbivores have reconquered Switzerland over the last 150 years and how they influence the landscape.

"Sand lizard. Are you all right?"

New special exhibition at the Nature Museum

From Friday, April 12, the Nature Museum of the Zurich Wilderness Park will be presenting the new special exhibition "Sand lizard. Everything alright?". It offers an exciting insight into the life of these bright green mini-dinosaurs. In keeping with the theme, the Zurich Wilderness Park has redesigned the habitat next to the Nature Museum. Sand lizards, insects and numerous other small animals feel at home in the new small animal community.

Spring is here: start of the season at Zurich Wilderness Park!

From Good Friday, March 29, the visitor center in Sihlwald will be open again. This marks the start of the main season in the Zurich Wilderness Park. The Wilderness Park team has once again put together an exciting program with around 300 events.
